Defensible Space Special Assistance Program
The Defensible Space Special Assistance Program (DSSAP) is designed to assist low-income seniors and low-income disabled citizens in creating defensible space around their homes.
Applicants must be unable to complete this type of work due to physical or economic barriers, have no person to assist in the clearance or cannot afford to hire a contractor.
SERVICES PROVIDED:
Our program is designed to assist in creating defensible space around your property. This is accomplished by fuel reduction activities.
- Defensible space work per property including brush and tree trimming/thinning, and chipping of removed vegetation.
- Chipped vegetation will be left onsite.
- Work completed will be according to State Public Resource Code 4291
- Work will be performed by professional contractors, who are bonded and insured.
- On-site education about effective defensible space.
- Services do not include removal of household trash or other materials surrounding the home.
PLEASE NOTE: If we cannot access the home due to large accumulations of non-vegetative debris, safety concerns, or other access issues, we cannot provide services.
Low Income Qualifications: An annual household income at or below 250% of the U.S. Poverty Level for 2024:
- One-person household: Income <$37,650 (annually)
- Two-person household: Income <$51,100 (annually)
- Three-person household: Income <$64,550 (annually)
- Four-person household: Income <$78,000 (annually)
- Five-person household: Income <$91,450 (annually)
Applicants who are both disabled and/or elderly and experiencing financial barriers are prioritized.
Applicants who live in high or very high fire severity zones are prioritized.
Applicants who have recently received a notice to abate from a fire protection district are prioritized.
This program is funding dependent, and services are offered on a first-come, first-served basis as program funds become available.
* Defensible space created by the YWPFSC and their contractors does not guarantee that your home will not be lost in the event of a wildfire.
* On-going maintenance is not included in this program.
